The First Year: Type 2 Diabetes: An Essential Guide for the Newly Diagnosed

After Gretchen Becker was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 1996, she educated herself on every aspect of this chronic condition — by reading medical and scientific books and journals, talking with doctors and listening to her own body. In 2001, she marshaled everything she had learned as a "patient-expert" into the first edition of this book, which she has now completely updated and revised. The First Year®—Type 2 Diabetes uniquely guides you step-by-step through your first year with diabetes, walking you through everything you need to learn and do each day of your first week after diagnosis, each subsequent week of the first month, and each subsequent month of the crucial first year. In clear, concise, accessible language, Becker covers a wide range of practical, medical, and lifestyle issues, beginning with coming to terms with your diagnosis and then moving on to subjects including: Choosing the diet that is best for you The role of exercise Daily blood-glucose testing routines and understanding lab tests Medications and supplements Networking with others Insurance issues Traveling and socializing

Dear Diabetes....(A letter to my friend, The Big D)...(D78)

Dear Diabetes....(A letter to my friend, The Big D)...(D78)

Houston, April 19, 2010

Dear Diabetes,
Big D, my maaan. You made no sense to me today. You also annoyed me a lot today.
I try to be your friend and be nice to you, give you EVERYTHING you ask for and demand....yet you still stab me in the back every once in a while. Like making me stab myself numerous times each day and night with lancets and pen needles isn't enough.

You NEVER sleep. You know, you ask for a lot 24/7, yet I get so little in return.
Well, seeing great numbers and my health are a great thing and I do appreciate them BUT you came unannounced, knocking on my door one day. Not only that, but you were also never invited. So considering that, I think I'm being a pretty nice hostess, don't you think?

In the beginning you even made me look like a junkie with all those syringes and such but I'm glad that's over.

I don't want to be all mean because at least you did not come without presents that my friends are almost jealous of: Shiny, colorful meters, insulin pens and other little D-gadgets.

You made me get reeeaallly good at head math (thanks!) and actually taught me about nutrition, which is something I never cared about. So, yeah yeah, you did do some good....

On the other hand you make me carry so much junk around. Sometimes I wish I could just shove my wallet, keys, and cell into my jeans pocket and leave the house again...no bag, no double checking, making sure I have enough supplies and snacks.

I am not sorry to say that I cannot wait for the day that you will pack your bags and leave, because you can be quite exhausting and frustrating. One of my friend calls you my "unplanned child". She may be right, but only you will never grow up. You will always be needy. As Nick Jonas said, "waiting on a cure, but none of them are sure. A little bit longer and I'll be fine..."

Well then Big D,
see ya,
now, later, tomorrow, forever?
Love,
J

Heating Pad - Diabetes 365 Day 145 - February 27, 2008

I totally managed to throw my back out of order and so I've been going to the chiropractor. He's had me doing some exercises to help the problem and laying on a heating pad as well.

When I was making my bed, I saw on the heating pad it said something about diabetics. Something about if you're a diabetic you should ask your doctor before using the heating pad.

That's a new one to me, what can a heating pad possibly do to a diabetic?

There is no cure for diabetes...

Yet!
